Modern Language Courses
Make your language learning goals a reality this summer! Learning a language can be daunting, but the most important thing is to start.
We have a selection of part-time language courses (online and in-school) available for different interests and levels.
Maybe you are a complete beginner looking to try something new, or perhaps you’d like to reawaken a language you started learning long ago – we have the course for you. And if we don’t - please ask! We can open new languages, levels and classes if we have enough people interested, or private lessons are always available.
Our experienced, professional and friendly teachers will help you confidently develop your language skills and ensure that you have fun while doing so.
After the Summer Term ends our full (15-week) Autumn Term will begin w/c 31st August - we hope you will continue on with us! We are invested in your language progress so are pleased to offer all returning students a 10% discount on their next course with us.
Courses will be available to book shortly - contact email@example.com to register your interest
If you cannot find the course you are looking for, let us know what course you would like. We will open-up new courses if we get enough interest in them.

During any period in which schools are required to close, all courses will be held online via Zoom with no interruption to the class schedule. Our teaching team has built up significant experience of online teaching, so you can be sure your learning will be able to continue effectively. Many of our returning students will already be familiar with our foreign langauge teachers. Here are videos from some of our teachers. They are looking forward to seeing you all again online, and excited to meet new students too.
Ana, Spanish teacher
Alexandra, Spanish teacher
Sidney, Mandarin teacher
"Alexandra is a great teacher. She always makes the classes fun and is open to suggestions about what we would like to cover." - Barry
“The classes have gone very well so far. They are enjoyable and fun, and challenging at the same time. We do activities with a range of difficulties and a range of different styles (such as listening, reading etc.). I’m very happy with Alexandra’s teaching style.” – Abigail
"Ana is great and very patient and I feel it is a good learning pace. [I] find it a really great learning environment, a really friendly class and Ana ensures everyone participates, and in a way that feels very comfortable even to the less confident of characters. Having not studied a language since secondary school (about 15 years ago), I'm really enjoying this new found passion and I think Ana and IH have played a huge part in that so thank you :) " - Kat
"I think Ana is very confident with the technology and I know from my own mistakes that she is patient with those who are not so sure. Zoom is very user friendly and on the second week I felt quite happy using it. I think the fact that Ana can put us in 'rooms' to work with other students is a real asset to a teacher as students are often reluctant to stand up and move round !" - Norma
"Ana is a delightful person and a gifted teacher. She provides well-planned, varied lessons and is methodical and precise in her approach to grammar. She is also very encouraging." - Sue
“Had a great on-line lesson with Anna yesterday.” – Michael
“Thank you very much for arranging the online lesson with Ana. We are now experienced 'Zoom' users, and will look forward to more fun lessons!” – Richard and Audrey
Are you open for face-to-face classes?
Yes! In line with government guidance for schools and education, International House Bristol reopened for the second time on 8th March 2021, and is teaching both online and face-to-face classes. You can see our Covid-19 Safety Measures here, and Terms & Conditions for Foreign Lanuage (FL) courses here.
If a new lockdown is enforced, we will move all courses online, just as we successfully did during previous lockdowns, so there will be no lessons lost.
What happens if I need to self-isolate during the course?
If you are required to self-isolate during your course but feel well, please let us know and, where possible, we can arrange for you to join your class remotely. There are no refunds for missed classes once the course begins.
Where is the school?
Our Foreign Language courses take place at our Queens Avenue building, close to The Triangle. You can find directions and our full contact details here: https://www.ihbristol.com/contact-us
Who are the courses for?
Everyone! Our group courses are open to adults of all ages (min. 18+ years, or 16+ for some courses) and are ideal for first time learners, picking back up from where you left off on a previous course, or revisiting a language you may have previously studied at school. At certain times of the year we run short ‘holiday’ language courses to equip you with basic vocabulary and phrases you will find useful when travelling abroad.
Levels range from Complete Beginner to Advanced, and with fully-online courses now part of our permanent offering it’s even easier to fit your studies in to your schedule.
I have never done an online course before, what will it be like?
Our online course will be very similar to a classroom experience, in many ways:
- Your teacher will have prepared fun activities to keep you motivated and focused.
- You will experience the language through different mediums, like watching video clips and listening to audio.
- You will have pair work activities aimed to get all students actively participating and practicing their language.
- Your teacher will be able to use a virtual whiteboard to write down key language points.
How will they differ from classroom lessons?
- You can save the teachers virtual whiteboard! This means you don’t have to worry as much about noting down everything in the moment; you can focus more on the lesson in progress and refer back to the whiteboard afterwards for specific notes as needed.
- You can join us from wherever you are. All you need is a suitable device and good internet connection, making it even easier to fit your classes into your schedule.
- Another bonus to having classes online, is that many of the classes will be recorded. This means that you can re-watch a class if you want to go back over some parts that you want to practice more.
What do I need for an online class?
You will need:
- For the best experience, you need a laptop, or desktop computer; a large tablet device or smartphone also work.
- You need an internet broadband connection: for gallery view and/or 720p HD video, 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down)
- For sound and video, it is best with headphones and a webcam, or you can use the camera and speaker on your computer.
- A quiet space where you won’t be interrupted or distracted.
- A pen and paper to take some notes.
I am not the best at computers, will there be some help with logging in?
Yes. Each student will receive a video on how to log into Zoom. Once you have done it once, it is quite easy. You will also receive a code and password for your class, which you use every time you login.
With this code and password, you will be able to login to your class even before it begins. This allows you to see what the classroom will look like, get familiar with some of Zoom’s features and to test your mic, speakers and camera a few days ahead of your class.
During office hours, you will also have our foreign language phone number that you can call if you need any help logging into your first lesson.
What online teaching platform are you using?
We will be using Zoom. Zoom is very easy to use and has some wonderful features that makes it feel like you are in a real classroom.
How many students are there per class?
There is a max of 10 students per class.
We will also need a minimum of 4 students to run a class.
We are hosting classes for a variety of ages, levels and languages over the coming months. Our online classes are designed to get you talking in your target language from day one.
What if the coronavirus lockdown is lifted while my course is still running?
Most classes are scheduled after work and school hours, so you should still be able to continue with your online classes. If you have any questions about this, you can always give me an email or call: email@example.com / 07403 379575
Will you have any classes running in June and July?
Yes! In the event, that the UK coronavirus lockdown extends into June and July, we are planning to create more dynamic and engaging courses online. We are currently exploring creative ideas to keep you entertained, active and learning.
