Stucture of OET test day

The OET exam takes place at our Queens Avenue building in Clifton, Bristol - see location & how to find us here

  • Registration starts at 7:30am and closes at 8:30am

  • The exam starts at 9:00am

 

Listening sub-test - Approximately 45 minutes

Same content for all healthcare professions.

  • Part A: Two separate consultations between healthcare professional and a patient
  • Part B: Six short dialogues or monologues in workplace settings
  • Part C: Two long presentations or interviews with health professionals

N.B. We do not have headphones for this part of the exam; the listening test is heard through a good quality sound system, and before the exam begins the volume is tested with candidates in the room to give them the chance to request it to be adjusted.

Reading sub-test  - 60 minutes

Same content for all healthcare professions.

  • Pat A: A fast reading task
  • Part B: Six short workplace extracts
  • Part C: Two long presentation passages

Writing sub-test - 45 minutes

Specific to profession, based on typical workplace situations.

The task is to write a letter, usually a referral letter of between 180 - 200 words. Sometimes, especially for some professions, a different type of letter is required: e.g. a letter of transfer or discharge, or a letter to advise or inform a patient, carer, or group

Speaking sub-test - Approximately 20 minutes (Everyone will be given an allocated time)

 

Specific to profession, based on typical workplace situations.

In a private room you will take part in two role-plays. You take your professional role (as a healthcare professional) while the interlocutor plays a patient or client, or sometimes a relative or carer.
