The CELTA course is an initial training course. It is designed for native and non native speakers of English who have no or little experience of teaching. It is also suitable for teachers with a few years of experience who would like an official qualification to formalise their teacher status.
The FTE course is aimed at teachers who already have teaching experience. The course involves language training (brushing up English) as well as focussing on aspects of methodology. For this reason it is mainly suitable for non-native English teachers.
Yes. This course is designed for anybody who is working as a teacher and has six months or more of working experience of delivering classes.
If you do not already have experience as a teacher, you would be better served by an initial training course. Please see our pages related to our four-week CELTA course.
Teachers who attend this course usually have an English level of C1 or above. However, it would be possible to benefit from most parts of the course with an English level of high B2.
No, we don't ask you for money until after we have a minimum number (of six attendees) so that we can run the course. We will stay in touch after your initial application and notify you as course numbers change over the months leading up to the course.
While some content remains the same from year to year, about 30% of the course content each year is changed or added according to the interests and needs analysis of the teachers attending the course.
No. This course is does not contain a teaching practice component. If you are looking for a course with assessment of teaching, you might prefer our CELTA course. Also, if you have a number of year's experience and want to advance your knowledge and teaching skills further, you might consider doing a Cambridge DELTA course or Trinity Dip TESOL. IH Bristol do not currently offer either of these courses.
You will get an attendance certificate. This includes a space where a trainer will comment on your performance on the course and your general level of teaching knowledge and language use.
There are three ninety-minute sessions every day. Two of these are designated as teaching focussed lessons and the third is designated as a "language and culture" session. All course content is open to a degree of negotiation during the course and where attendees request specific language or teaching content, we will do our best to provide these.
Of course.
We can arrange accommodation with a host in Bristol - you can choose from half-board, self-catering homestays or student residence, and we will try to place you as close to the school as possible.
Alternatively, for private accommodation, Clifton Short Lets and Your Apartment are popular options for many of our students.
See our Accommodation page or contact us for details.
Yes, you can join afternoon, evening and weekend activities that are scheduled for the adult students during your course. Some events are free (e.g. city walking tours). You can join and pay for social programme activities on an opt-in basis.
Alternatively, if you are accompanying junior students as a group leader, you will need to attend junior social activities.
The price listed is for a two-week course. If your dates make a two-week course impossible and you would still like to attend, please contact the school by e-mail and the academic management team will consider your request.
Yes. You can do any number of weeks of English lessons before or after your FTE course. However, on any week of your stay, you should either be fully on an English course or fully on the FTE course. You cannot study an English course and an FTE course on the same week.
Under normal circumstances, all IH Bristol courses are delivered face-to-face. While we have the equipment and facilities to provide hybrid classes (where some students attend online and others in person), we feel that those students attending in person have a better learner experience when classes are delivered to 100% in-person groups.
Also, we could provide a fully online FTE course on demand if a group of six or more attendees request it. Please contact us if you would like us to arrange this. This depend on the dates that you are hoping for.
