About IELTS

  • The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is owned by Cambridge ESOL, the British Council and IDP Australia. IELTS is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who want to work or study in countries where English is the primary language of communication.
  • IELTS is available in two modules, Academic or General Training. You must decide prior to applying which module is best for you as we cannot advise you on which module you should take. It is highly recommended that you speak with the governing body who has requested that you take the IELTS test and ensure that you apply to take the module that you require. Please note that the General Training Module is not offered on all IELTS test dates.
  • The Academic module is generally for people who want to study an undergraduate or postgraduate degree course or who wish to register with a professional body.
  • The General Training module focuses on basic survival skills in a broader social and educational setting. General Training is generally suitable if you are joining a training programme or doing work experience in English speaking countries, but is not designed for degree level. This module is also generally suitable for those wishing to emigrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.
  • IELTS International House Bristol is a pen and paper test. Computer based IELTS tests are not currently available in the UK. Candidates are tested in four skill areas - listening, reading, writing and speaking English.

Test dates

N.B The speaking portion of your test will take place either on the Friday before test day between 16:00pm and 20:00pm or on Saturday afternoon of test day after the listening, reading and writing portions of the test. Registration for all candidates is at 9:00am on Saturday of test day. The listening, reading and writing tests usually finish around 13:00pm, with the Saturday speaking tests being held between 1:45pm and 6:00pm. If you have taken your speaking test on Friday, you will be free to go after the listening, reading and writing test. Speaking tests on Saturday afternoon usually run from 13:45pm until approximately 17:30pm.
