Teacher of Portuguese
My name is Luisa and I born in Viana do Castelo, city located on the seaside of the northern Portugal (Alto Minho) and close to Galicia. In distant times, Galician-Portuguese, the language spoken in Galicia and northern Portugal was spoken among the speakers of these two regions. – As you can imagine we still continue to understand each other and get on together very well! It was in these lands of Galicians and Minhotos that Portuguese Language was born and from 1139 was taken to other regions and, later one, with the discovery’s era, arrived at all the former colonies of Portugal, countries where we have, now, languages in Portuguese.
I remember to be always passionate about foreign languages and curious about other countries and cultures; I realized that learning a foreign language would provide me with unique moments.
I graduated in Teaching French and Portuguese from Minho’s University in 2008 where a pedagogical traineeship was included and I could experience teaching for the first time; during my studies I lived in France, as an ERASMUS student, where I had the opportunity to improve my French language skills and learn about the culture of the country and since then that I am travelling to learn.
As a teacher I always wanted to travel, and my first experience abroad was in Timor-Leste where I was able to learn about the language and the culture of Timorese people. I also went to Mozambique as a volunteer.
In 2013 I decided that would be in England that I will be learning a new language and I also resume my studies and I enrolled in a master’s course in TESOL.
The “closer” we are to a foreign language we want to learn, the faster we absorb its natural features of the language and, thus, we acquire groups of words/chunks that enable us to improve our communicative competence enabling us to communicate effectively. At same time that I am improving my practice and growing professionally, I aim to provide my learners with unique learning moments and encourage them to travel to learn.
In my free time I enjoy running outdoors, playing the clarinet, reading poetry and following subjects related to the Portuguese community living in the United Kingdom.
