Arabic is the official language in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East, and with over 300 million speakers it is the fifth most widely spoken language in the world. Arabic is one of the six official language of the United Nations (UN), so can be extremely helpful for those wishing to pursue careers in international organisations or trade.
Did you know?
- There are only 2 tenses in Arabic: past and present
- As a result of the Moorish conquest of the Iberian peninsula in the 8th century, around 8000 Spanish words actually evolved from Arabic - and many of these have crossed over into English, too. Even the number system used today was introduced to Europeans by Arab merchants.
- Fun fact: in Arabic there are at least 11 words for 'love' and reportedly over a hundred words for 'camel!'!
