Plastic bags are an inescapable part of our (0)  lives. Walk into any supermarket and you will see huge piles of the things near the (1)  with customers busily filling them with their day’s (2)  . In the UK (3)  , we manage to get through eight billion of them in a year. This number may seem surprisingly (4)  but when you consider that each carrier is only used once and multiply that by the number of shops that we each visit in the (5)  of a week, the scale of our over-consumption soon becomes (6)  .

But now there is a new (11)  that many people are talking about. Several towns in the UK have banned shops from giving out free carrier bags and are (12)  members of the public to buy a more permanent shopping bag that they can reuse many times.
