International House World Bristol Speaking to the World

About us

Background of IH Bristol - by Val Hennessy, Director

Greetings from IH Bristol.  It is only when I come to update information like this that I realise how quickly time is passing and how much IH Bristol is changing. Despite the changes, however, IH Bristol remains a centre of excellence with the highest-quality standards and is still a great place to work.

Since becoming an affiliate, we have expanded into a second set of premises in Clifton, which has allowed us to increase the number of people working here and to offer the best language-learning experience to even more students. We are delighted with our school at 2 Queen’s Avenue, Clifton and so are those who come to study here. We have building plans for this site and our head office at 27 Oakfield Road which should make both buildings even better for our students and staff.

We continue to put students first and have introduced Individual Learning Plans to ensure every student benefits to the maximum from their time with us. Everything we do in EFL, from materials creation to safe-guarding, is done to provide each and every student with the best possible learning experience. That's why we are second to none and remain the premier school in the South West of England.

It is now almost five years since The Language Project became IH Bristol and it has been a busy five years. We have all benefitted greatly from the affiliation and have become more and more active in IHWO. In March 2014, IH Bristol is hosting the International House Young Learners Conference and delegates from all over the world will see what a wonderful place this is to study.

IH Bristol is continuing to grow with our MFL department becoming our latest success. From modest beginnings, we now offer a variety of foreign languages, four evenings a week. We aim to increase the numbers taking a foreign language, to increase the number of in-company courses we run and to grow our Study Abroad agency. At IH Bristol, we know the benefits of learning a new language and we want to share that with everybody.

Our Exam Centre is also going from strength to strength, with increasing numbers across the board. Our exams officers do a great job ensuring everybody has a positive experience when they choose to take exams with us. We have added August sessions of the Cambridge Upper Main Suite and we run four-week courses leading up to the actual exams. Needless to say, the courses are always full and the results are amazing.

We are continuing to innovate in materials creation and have expanded our junior summer provision to include a second residential centre at Bromsgrove School as well as the one at Clifton College. We still offer a homestay option at our Queen’s Avenue branch and now adults can choose to study afternoons only. Year-round, juniors can attend in groups and we provide bespoke courses to suit specific needs.

Teacher training is as vibrant as ever and we are proud to be able to offer so many of our trainees their first taste of real-life teaching. EFL is a rewarding career, whether you do it for life or just for a short time, as we do our best to ensure all those who train with us get the most out of what they learn.

We continue to give back as well: our free exercises are available to anybody who owns or has access to a computer and our Phrase of the Day videos can help students worldwide to increase their knowledge on a daily basis. Later this year, we are to launch a brand new language initiative which should prove engaging and rewarding in equal measure.

All in all, life is good at IH Bristol. Why not come and see for yourself?
